FIREWORK SEASON 2026: SPARKLER SAFETY This firewo FIREWORK SEASON 2026: SPARKLER SAFETY

This firework season, East Ayrshire Council and Ayrshire 360 are working alongside the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Police Scotland to help everyone enjoy fireworks safely.

Did you know that sparklers can become five times hotter than cooking oil? They may look harmless, but they are not toys and can cause serious burns.

Please remember:

✨ Never give sparklers to children under five
✨ Light one sparkler at a time and always wear gloves
✨ Hold sparklers at arm’s length
✨ Never run or wave sparklers near another person
✨ Never hold a baby or young child while using a sparkler
✨ Avoid loose or flowing clothing that could catch fire
✨ Place used sparklers hot-end down in a bucket of water
✨ Don’t take sparklers to busy public displays

If someone is burned, cool the area under cool or lukewarm running water for 20 minutes. Do not use ice, creams or greasy substances. Cover the burn loosely with cling film and seek medical advice.

If clothing catches fire: **stop, drop and roll**. Call 999 in an emergency.

Please share these important reminders with family and friends. Let’s help everyone across East Ayrshire enjoy a safe firework season.

Galston Footpaths – Update Following concerns rai Galston Footpaths – Update

Following concerns raised by a local resident about the condition of the footpaths in Galston town centre, I took this up with Ayrshire Roads Alliance.

ARA have advised me that the poor concrete section pictured will be replaced during this financial year, although this is likely to be after Christmas.

Galston will then be reassessed for next year’s programme to identify any further work required.

Thank you to David for raising this with me and for allowing me to share his photos. I’ll continue to keep an eye on this and provide any further updates.
This morning I met Anneke Freel CE of Ayrshire360 This morning I met Anneke Freel CE of Ayrshire360 plus Bobby Gemmell joint chair of GCDT at The Portland in Galston.

We discussed the transfer of ‘Greener Communities’ from East Ayrshire Council to Ayrshire360 by April 2027.

I have witnessed the spiraling decline in performance delivered by the ‘Greener Team’ during my time as an elected member. It is a service that has been decimated by cuts .... and more cuts for years. This must be staggeringly demotivating for the ‘Greener’ team and of course has impacted hugely on our outdoor spaces.

For the first time - I feel optimistic that we have costed/ organised plans for the future of all our green spaces - including the cemeteries.

Over the course of the next few months, I will be providing further updates.
